The place was nearly empty both nights, so Jim Morrison, John Densmore, Robby Krieger, and Ray Manzarek took a rare opportunity to improvise and experiment. The 2-CD set LIVE AT THE MATRIX, the latest in the acclaimed series of previously unreleased Doors concerts from Rhino and Bright Midnight Archives, presents over two hours of music from these fabled performances, recorded on March 7 and 10, 1967, While recent live Doors titles from Rhino and Bright Midnight have spotlighted the band's final tour before Morrison's death, LIVE AT THE MATRIX reaches back to their earliest days - and to shows that have been widely bootlegged but never officially issued. The new collection - featuring cover art by legendary San Francisco artist Stanley Mouse - was restored and meticulously mastered from first-generation tapes acquired by Elektra Records and The Doors 40 years ago. This is probably the closest we've come to a true document of The Doors without constraints, says Bruce Botnick, the album's producer and the band's longtime co-producer and engineer. On Disc One, the band performs much of its self-titled 1967 debut LP, released only two months prior to the Matrix shows. Highlights include expanded versions of The End and Back Door Man, Alabama Song (Whisky Bar), Break On Through (To The Other Side) and Allen Toussaint's Get Out Of My Life, Woman, which has never appeared on any previous Doors albums. Disc Two offers a glimpse of the band mapping out its future, working out early versions of several songs from upcoming albums: "Crawling King Snake" (LA Woman); "Summer's Almost Gone" (Waiting For The Sun); and nearly half of the songs from The Doors' second album, Strange Days. Directed by: Hiroshi Teshigahara Contry: Japan Following "Woman of the Dunes" in 1964, Hiroshi Teshigahara continued his collaboration with avant-garde novelist/playwright Kobo Abe and experimental composer Toru Takemitsu for the Face of Another. Starring Tatsuya Nakadai as a man "burried alive behind eyes without a face", the film adresses the illusive nature of identity and the agony of its absence. A businessman facially scarred in a laboratory fire receives psychotherapy from a psychiatrist, and obtains an amazingly lifelike mask from the doctor. Soon after being fitted for the mask, he seduces his wife and succeeds. But his wife claims she was aware all along who he was and believed that both were just masquerading together as most couples usually do in different ways. Strangely enough, his personality seemingly begins to change after he puts on the mask as if the mask has influenced his personality. His new identity does not enable him to reintegrate into society after all. A subplot is inserted in fragments. A good-natured young woman, the right side of whose face is disfigured, has been hurt by others' inquisitive eyes and insults, and has been shunned by men. She asks her older brother, the only man who understands her pain and solitude, to make love to her, hiding from him the intent of killing herself after then. This follow-up to Abe and Teshigahara's Sunna no Onna (1965) is even more surrealistic, thanks to the intrusion of science fiction elements. Tatsuya Nakadai (X) is horribly burned it a laboratory accident and seeks the help of Dr. K___, who designs a new face for him out of a realistic mask. Is the mask controlling him, or did he create the personality of the mask? He randomly remembers scenes from a film he saw in which Bibari Maeda was a horribly scarred woman (Hiroshima), shunned by most people, who commits incest with her brother and throws herself into the sea. Allongside Franju's "Les Yeux sans visage", Mamoulian's "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde"; Whale's "Frankenstein", and Freund's "Mad Love", Teshigahara and Abe's "The Face of Another" stands proud as one of cinema's most haunting explorations of identity.
